Sometimes I think about all the places my white sneakers have taken me, and I get a little sentimental. There was the pair of black and white Adidas Stan Smiths that took me through the winding streets of Paris. And when I moved to New York, I alternated between a pair of Nike Air Force Ones and a splurged-on pair of Vejas that I saved for special occasions. I’m someone who believes in the enduring power of white sneakers—so when Reformation launched its first-ever sneaker, the Harlow ($128), I wanted to see how it lived up to the greats.

A little bit about the Harlow sneakers

Like many of Reformation’s creations, the shoes are designed using the brand’s RefRecycling principles. Meaning, the sneakers are sourced from existing Reformation materials collected from past owners. When you turn the sneakers back into Reformation, you score $25 off your next order (always exciting).

The Harlows are made with responsibly-sourced leather, come in size range five through 11, and feature five dreamy colorways: Avocado Swirl (a marble-y light green), Lawn (true green), Midnight (an almost-black navy blue), Pompadour (a blue and white floral patterns), and Serenade (dusty pink). In truth, they’re stripped down, simple sneakers—but if you’re on the look for a dressier pair you can rock with a dress or skirt in the summer, they’re one of the best picks out there.

My experience breaking them in

When my pair arrived in the mail, I concocted an ill-advised plan to wear them on a long beach walk with friends. This, of course, breaks the very first rule of new shoe ownership—which is never to stray too far from your house on your inaugural walk. Chances are, you’ll wind up with blisters and a resentful attitude toward your brand-new shoes. But nevertheless, I adjusted the Harlow laces, slipped them on, and went on to meet my friends.

Some sneakers feel like walking in bare feet, and that’s the case with the Harlows. They’re supportive, sure—but I quickly forgot that I was even wearing them. Before I knew it, I walked five plus miles with my friends without even noticing I was wearing new shoes. And, somehow (it’s a true miracle!), I get out of the whole experience with no blisters.

Now, the Harlows are very flat. So chances are podiatrists wouldn’t actually stan me covering all that mileage with no arch support. However, every once in a while, you just have to—*ahem*—walk on the wild side of life. And, for my money, the Harlows will be the white sneaker I return to again and again for meandering summer walks.
