I’ve always wanted to love Supergoop! Glow Screen, but have never been able to get on board. The shimmery formula has a champagne hue that stuck out on my brown skin, no matter how much I tried to blend it in. Finally, the brand launched the beloved sunscreen in a deeper hue—Golden Hour—and I fell in love the second I tried it.

On the left, I’m wearing the OG Supergoop! Glow Screen ($36) in the shade Sunrise. On the right, I’m wearing Golden Hour. The difference is super subtle. Both rub in to be nearly sheer. But, Sunrise makes my skin look a bit ashy—even more so IRL. The cast isn’t nearly as egregious as many sunscreens that leave a white or purple haze on deeper skin tones, but it still didn’t look good. Golden Hour, on the other hand, looks flawless.

Golden Hour has a beautiful bronzy finish that buffs into my skin perfectly. I don’t feel the same need to turn my head to multiple different angles and look at it in different lighting to ensure there are no streaks, which is what I did with Sunrise. Instead, the experience is so easy. I can put it on like I would any other complexion product and get an effortlessly sun-kissed glow—which I imagine is the experience fairer-skinned people had with the original shade.

Although I had such a great experience testing out Golden Hour, I know that I’m not that dark. And since the darkest person to swatch it on the Supergoop! website is around my complexion,  I asked a friend who has a deeper complexion than me to test out the new shade. And, disappointingly, it was not a good match.

In the above photo, while you can see that Golden Hour disappears on my hand (right), it leaves a cloudy haze of pigment on hers (left). Although the formula is pretty sheer, its pigments are too light, which explains the ashy cast.

While Goldern Hour is my perfect match, I’d love to see Supergoop! launch a few more shades to complement even deeper complexions. When asked if there are plans to expand, a brand representative said the brand is “currently focused on introducing Golden Hour and continuing to see consumer reaction to the product, but will definitely let you know of any updates regarding product expansion as they’re available.” I hope this expansion does happen so everyone has the opportunity to use this product.
