Opinion | Germany Searches Its Soul

Europeans have been shocked by the upswell of anti-Israel, pro-Hamas, anti-Semitic protests on their streets over the past month, and none more so than Germans. Now senior Green Party politician Robert Habeck has issued a warning about what’s happening and who’s responsible, and kudos to him for taking on his own political side.

Mr. Habeck on Wednesday released a forceful video discussing events in the Middle East and in Germany’s streets. He’s a senior government official—Vice-Chancellor, the Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, and a leading member of the left-wing Green Party. His remarks come after a fire bombing last month of a Berlin synagogue and many other reports of anti-Semitic incidents that have shaken German society following Hamas’s Oct. 7 massacre in Israel.
