Europe may have dodged a natural-gas bullet this week, and what an instructive experience it was.
The lesson came via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, one of the principal conduits for Russian gas into Germany and the rest of central Europe. Gazprom, the Russian state-owned majority holder of the pipeline, took it offline for “maintenance,” and doubts grew about whether it would come back online.
